  Pawsitive Training Tips

  • Keep training fun!!!

  • Praise, Praise, Praise!!!

  • When your pup does something wrong, don't use no. Instead, use a word that describes what you actually want your pup to do. For example: Use the word "off" to keep your dog away from a plate of food, instead of no.

  • When you can't watch your pup, keep him/her in a long term confinement area or teathered to you so that he/she can't make a housetraining or chewing mistake.

  • If you find something your pup is scared of, be encouraging, with positive words and lots of treats!!!

  • Expose your pup to as many new experiences as you can in the first four months of his/her life--bridges, car rides, children, skateboards, different surfaces, babies, wheelchairs....anything your pup may encounter in adulthood.

  • Practice a bit of training before meal times with some of your pup's kibble--this helps you get training time in even during busy days.

  • When you leave your pup alone, don't make a big deal of it, say goodbye and that's the end of it.

  • When you come back after being away, remain calm, and don't give your pup attention until he/she is calm.

  • Always leave your pup with lots of kongs to chew, stuff each kong with lots of different yummy treats.
  • If your pup grabs something he/she shouldn't have, do not chase!!! Show him/her a tasty treat, call him to you and trade the item for that tasty treat.

Do not use your recall word (COME) until you have worked on this command for several weeks in a safe, controlled environment, preferably with a trainer--this word is one of the most important words your dog will ever learn.
